Last week we had the opportunity to take on a dog (🧡Sullivan aka Sully🧡) pictured above and NOT BREED BY US to possibly use as an interim Stud while we wait for the stunning North and Creed grow into men. Subject to DNA, Pennhip and extensive Vet Check. He is 3 years old.
We were told he has an incredible and happy nature and a clean bill of health. The seller was happy to arrange for the Vet Clinic to send his files. Not sure why but we did not receive them only a copy of one of his vaccines from 2023.
We were very excited to have this guy join the pack, made the payment and arranged transport. Eagerly awaiting his arrival I sat in my truck imagining how handsome he would be in real life and hoped he had the nature we look for in our program.
The transport arrived and I could see his beautiful eyes peering out of the crate. I could instantly see a sweet boy staring at me. My heart sank when he stepped out of the crate seriously under weight. My instant thought was, of course this dog found his way to me! I put him in the car and could feel every rib and scabs from clearly having a matted coat before being clipped off. I promised him I would get him heathy asap.
We stopped at Macas on the way home and he wolfed down 6 chicken nuggets. Don’t worry i don’t so this often. Just when the dogs arrive or have been good at the groomers etc.
We arrive home, Sully happily greets our dogs with a wagging tail. He gets on great with all the dogs and wasn’t worried about the horses, goats and chickens. He was very excited about the cats tho! Got him fed and settled, booked a vet appointment as he was due a vaccine and in need of his Vet Check. We went to bed hopeful that it all works out.
Well this is not so. He was up all night having trouble sleeping, he was laying on my legs on my bed seemingly in pain, constantly drinking, and needing to urinate sometimes with nothing coming out and pus coming from his willy!
Expecting that Sully’s vet visit would be a weight gain plan and antibiotics for a bladder infection I was shocked and disgusted to find out that this poor poor darling boy, was not only under weight needing to gain approx 1/3 his body weight. But on top of that suffering with a bladder infection, ear infection and prostate infection or possible prostate tumour. He is on strong antibiotics, pain meds, ear meds and goes in on Monday for Desexing and tests on his prostate.
This sweet kind boy, still went around the clinic loving on everyone and making all the vet nurses fall in-love with him. He is an absolute darling. In true sheepadoodle style he hugged all that would allow him, arms on their shoulders type hugs, even after being poked and prodded in the most private of places.
After a bit of a traumatic experience made easier by the incredible vets and vet nurses at Clinton Street Vet he is on the way to feeling better. He will get every bit of treatment needed and he will forget this awful time.
I am sickened with the idea that he has been suffering and for how long??? None of this happened overnight. Im furious at those that allowed him to suffer, they told me that didn’t notice and also couldn’t afford a vet. They said before he was clipped his matts were so thick that they couldn’t tell he was under weight. That he was always happy so they didn’t know he was unwell.
Ok so where was the honesty when selling him? No warning he was thin let alone anything else. They have since refunded the purchase price plus added $50 toward his care and apologised. This doesnt help me understand it or make it ok. I don’t know who exactly caused this neglect. All I know is it’s now over!
I hope that as a breeder my puppy families feel that if they were EVER struggling financially and one of our babies needed treatment that they could reach out. It doesn’t mean we are taking the blame or at fault, it just means that we love them forever and want nothing but the best for each and every one.
The idea of any one of my babies suffering breaks my heart. There is just no need.
These people clearly didn’t feel they could ask the breeder for help. Breeders are not at fault for owners not desexing a non breeding dog, starving them or ignoring issues. They should however expect their breeder to offer support, guidance and compassion as a minimum.
I will share his journey to health with all those who would like to follow and have added some photos of how he was when he arrived and his first few days here at Falconwood.
I can’t change his past, but I can promise his future will be full of love, care, and comfort. Please keep Sully in your thoughts as he faces his procedure on Monday.
