The average age that vets recommend desexing is at around 6 months. For large breed dogs greater than 20kg, there has been evidence to suggest that delaying desexing until maturity, over 12 months of age, may help protect against certain medical conditions. We agree with this and suggest you wait until your dog is 12 months of age but at the same time you should do what works for your family.
Our contract requires you to desex you dog before they are 18 months old. Our contract also states that You are not allowed to breed from your dog or allow anyone else to. You can choose to desex earlier than 18 months if you wish this is something you should discuss as a family and with your vet.
Female dogs who are not desexed before their second heat have a significantly increased risk of mammary cancer and uterine infection, most of our female dogs have their first cycle at around 9-11 months. We suggest desexing 2 months after their first cycle. Male dogs who are desexed are less likely to experience prostate problems and are not affected by testicular cancers, waiting until 12-18 months helps ensure that they have had the benefit of testosterone for bone and muscle development . Your vet will help you make an informed decision.
It is important when considering the time of desexing that you talk to your vet and weigh up the pros and cons.
Our contract does not allow the breeding of our pups ever. If you choose to ignore this you will be liable financially.
